“Anger Still an Energy: PiL’s Epic Buenos Aires Return” | PIL at C Art Media

“PiL’s Fire Burns On”

After a decade-long absence, Public Image Ltd’s return to Buenos Aires was seismic—an eruption of sound, history, and defiance. John Lydon, uncompromising as ever, commanded the stage at C Art Media with a presence that was both raw and magnetic, reminding everyone why he remains one of Britain’s most fearless frontmen.

The set opened with Home, instantly pulling the packed venue into PiL’s world. From there, the band moved through sharp social commentary (Know Now, Corporate), hypnotic experiments (Poptones, Death Disco, Flowers of Romance), and anthemic fire ((This Is Not a Love Song). A surprise cover of World Destruction added thrilling urgency, while Warrior and Shoom reignited the energy. Finally, Public Image brought the main set to a ferocious close, sending the crowd into a frenzy—pogoing broke out and the venue went absolutely mental.

The encore was pure catharsis. PiL tore into Open Up, then delivered a soaring Rise, complete with the crowd chanting “Anger is an energy” in perfect unison. The night ended with a furious medley (Annalisa / Attack / Chant), leaving fans exhilarated and exhausted.

But beyond the setlist, the atmosphere was electric. Buenos Aires audiences are renowned for their passion, and this night proved it once again—every lyric shouted back, every rhythm absorbed collectively. For me, the night carried personal resonance: the last time PiL visited, I interviewed Lydon; this time, a brief backstage meeting reaffirmed his status as a cultural trailblazer. His influence runs through the lineage of Joy Division, The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, Oasis, and countless others—stitched into the DNA of British music and into the lives of those of us shaped by it.

It was a 14-song masterclass in PiL’s legacy: confrontational, experimental, anthemic. Nearly fifty years on, they remain vital, dangerous, and deeply relevant. For Buenos Aires, this wasn’t just a gig—it was a reunion with a legend, a celebration of resilience, and a reminder that anger is, indeed, an energy.

And fittingly, this seismic night carried the banner of This Is Not the Last Tour. The phrase itself felt like both a promise and a provocation—Lydon reminding us that his work is far from finished. If anything, the Buenos Aires performance proved that PiL’s fire still burns with urgency, relevance, and defiance. One can only hope we’ll see Lydon again soon, continuing to challenge, inspire, and ignite the next generations who need voices unafraid to speak truth to power. One word sums it up: Epic.

Note: For the first time ever, this South American leg of the tour saw PiL play three cities in Argentina: Rosario, Buenos Aires, and Mar del Plata. Something unprecedented, underscoring the band’s enduring bond with Argentine audiences.

Support came from Fea, a Buenos Aires-based project led by actress and performer Sofía Gala Castiglione, whose set leaned into a dark, dub-infused strain of post-punk. Built around repetition, tension, and spoken-word intensity, their sound felt both raw and immersive, channeling the genre’s legacy while pushing it into more experimental, performance-driven territory. Fea land somewhere between the moodier edges of post-punk and a more theatrical, avant-garde sensibility—an intriguing and fitting precursor to PIL.

  1. John did not want to leave the stage, while the crowd was chanting his name, nor did we want to vacate the venue. It was a very powerful night which filled artists and audience with deep emotions.
